Tooth loss can be embarrassing, uncomfortable, and even dangerous to your health. Years ago, crowns, bridges, or dentures were the only ways to correct this problem. Today, however, dental implants are natural-looking and perform just like your own natural teeth. At her Jacksonville, Florida, practice, Dr. Tannen offers dental implants and advanced implant dentistry as permanent solutions to missing teeth.
By filling in the gap left by a missing tooth, dental implants prevent surrounding teeth from drifting out of place. During the procedure, an implant made from titanium is first placed into the space to act as an artificial tooth root, and a natural-looking porcelain restoration (crown) is then placed on the implant.
One of the main benefits of dental implants is that they are more permanent and act more naturally than other tooth replacement options, such as dentures. However, patients who already have a bridge (partial denture) or full set of dentures can still benefit from dental implants. In addition to replacing a single tooth, Dr. Tannen can use dental implants to stabilize dentures.
If you are interested in dental implants as a tooth replacement option, contact Dr. Tannen in Jacksonville, Florida. She can answer your implant dentistry questions and determine if dental implants are the right option for you unique needs.

At her practice in Jacksonville, Dr. Tannen offers Invisalign® as a convenient and comfortable alternative to traditional metal braces. Using a series of clear, custom-molded, removable aligners, your teeth can be straightened without the metal wires and brackets, or rubber bands used in traditional braces.
During your treatment with Invisalign®, your teeth will gradually move into their new, more attractive position as you proceed through your set of aligners. Many people can complete treatment with Invisalign® and achieve a beautiful new smile in about a year. The aligners are removable, so you can eat, drink, and care for your teeth throughout the treatment. And because the aligners are clear, no one will even know you are wearing braces!
To start treatment, Dr. Tannen will make an impression of your teeth to send to Invisalign® so that your set of aligners can be custom made. Once you receive your aligners, you will wear the first in your series for several weeks, then discard it and replace it with the next aligner in your series. Once you have progressed through all of your aligners, your teeth will be straighter.

For more than 100 years, dentistry has restored teeth primarily with a material made of mercury and silver. While this substance performs adequately in some cases, modern dental materials are far superior. Today's tooth-colored filling composites are not only more attractive and natural-looking than the old silver fillings, they are also stronger and more durable. Dr. Tannen can provide a bright, healthy, strong smile with these exciting new techniques in adhesion dentistry.
Crowns, sometimes called caps, look and function just like natural teeth. Dr. Tannen may recommend a crown if your tooth has such damage that it cannot hold a filling, or if your tooth is cracked or broken and in danger of injuring the root if left unattended. A crown covers your tooth completely, and is also used as the natural-looking restoration for dental implants. The crown fits snugly at the gum line and protects what remains of the natural tooth. Like porcelain veneers, crowns are made of a translucent material to ensure an incredibly natural-looking result. Dr. Tannen offers porcelain crowns that match the rest of your teeth, without a dark metal line, and keep your smile looking natural and healthy.

Porcelain onlays and inlays are used to restore the function and appearance of a tooth that has been weakened by decay or by having a previous filling removed, but does not require a crown. Inlays fill the space where the old structure was removed; onlays cover and protect thin areas of the tooth. These restorations can be made of porcelain, gold, or tooth-colored resin. Dr. Tannen is pleased to offer the CEREC® in-office system which, for many patients, can quickly create an inlay or onlay during a single office visit, without having to return for a second appointment.
Dr. Tannen may recommend a bridge to restore the health and beauty of your smile if you have missing teeth or a severely damaged tooth that requires removal. Like dental implants, bridges fill the gaps left by missing teeth to prevent the surrounding teeth from drifting out of place. A dental bridge attaches permanently to the adjacent teeth. For this reason, it is called a fixed restoration, as opposed to removable restorations such as partial dentures. Dr. Tannen will evaluate your dental condition and help you determine if a dental bridge is the best dental restoration option for your needs.
Fewer people require full dentures today due to advances in modern dentistry. However, if you need dentures or have older dentures that need to be replaced, there are new products available that look and function naturally and feel incredibly comfortable.
Dr. Tannen can replace your old, worn-out dentures with state-of-the-art dentures that blend with your features for a natural appearance. By designing your dentures to blend with your skin, hair, and eye color, Dr. Tannen can help you achieve a smile that will make you look years younger.
Contact Dr. Tannen at her Jacksonville practice to learn how dental implants and advancements in implant dentistry can help make a partial or full set of dentures more stable.
Root canal therapy has somehow earned an erroneous reputation as being a long, uncomfortable, and painful experience. However, for most patients, the pain of the damaged tooth is much worse than the root canal therapy to treat it!
When the soft, living tissue that is deep within the tooth becomes damaged from decay or injury, nerves respond by sending out pain signals, causing a toothache. During treatment, Dr. Tannen will remove this damaged tissue, called pulp, and thoroughly clean the area. She will then seal the tooth with a crown to protect it from further damage. The toothache will be eliminated and the new crown will restore your smile while adding strength to the tooth.
If you are still concerned about root canal (endodontic) therapy, schedule an appointment to speak with Dr. Tannen. Through oral sedation dentistry at our practice, a root canal procedure can even become a relaxing and comfortable experience!
Snoring can be more than just a nuisance. It is estimated that 70 to 90 million Americans snore, and in some cases, it can be life threatening. Snoring results when the muscles in the mouth and throat relax during sleep and allow the tongue to drop back, narrowing the breathing passage. The tissues vibrate as air is forced through this smaller opening, which produces the snoring sound.
Snoring can become dangerous if the tongue completely blocks the throat and cuts off the flow of air, resulting in a lowered level of oxygen in the blood. The brain signals the body to awaken when it senses this drop in oxygen, causing the snorer to wake and gasp for air, and then fall back asleep. This cycle can be repeated hundreds of times during a night, and can even be life threatening. This condition, known as obstructive sleep apnea, affects more than 12 million Americans.
Dr. Tannen can treat snoring and sleep apnea by prescribing a custom-made dental snoring appliance. These adjustable and comfortable appliances are worn during sleep to move the tongue and lower jaw forward and keep the airway open. They have been found to be more than 70 percent successful in treating snoring and mild to moderate sleep apnea. If you or someone you love is suffering from snoring or sleep apnea, Dr. Tannen can help. Please contact her Jacksonville office to schedule an appointment to discuss treatments for snoring, as well as any other procedures, such as dental implants and Invisalign®, that may be of interest to you.
The American Dental Association estimates that over 75 percent of all adults have or will have some form of periodontal (gum) disease. Gum disease is a bacterial infection in the gums and supporting structures of the teeth that typically progresses through several stages as it becomes more serious.
The first stage, gingivitis, is characterized by gum tissue that is red and puffy and bleeds easily when brushing or flossing. The second, third, and fourth stages are initial, moderate, and advanced periodontal disease, respectively. These stages are different from gingivitis because the infection has destroyed the bone supporting the teeth. Left untreated, periodontal disease will eventually result in tooth loss.
Early treatment is vital in halting the progression of periodontal disease. Dr. Tannen offers non-surgical treatment alternatives to help save your teeth and maintain your dental health. In addition, replacing missing teeth with dental implants can also improve the health of your gums. If you think you may be experiencing gingivitis or gum disease, please call Dr. Tannen at (904) 733-3360.
The unfortunate truth is that many dental problems don't cause any pain until they are in the advanced stages, at which point treatment becomes more invasive – and more expensive. But it's very difficult to look inside our own mouths and know what is really going on in there. How can we keep better track of our oral health and spot problems early on, when they can be treated most effectively?
To spot problems early on you need to make sure you visit a dentist regularly. To help patients get a better picture of their own dental health, Dr. Tannen uses an intraoral camera. This is a tiny handheld device that transmits images of your teeth and mouth onto a monitor, where you and Dr. Tannen can review them together. By seeing these images of your own mouth, you can better understand and make an informed decision about any treatment recommendations.
Dr. Tannen can examine your teeth and suggest a variety of treatments to ensure that your mouth stays healthy. Contact her Jacksonville, Florida practice to learn more about Invisalign®, implant dentistry, and other options for restoring your smile and keeping it healthy for years to come.
